Treatments for Sun Damaged Skin

Whilst for many, achieving a deep, bronze tan makes them feel more youthful and appear healthier, the truth is that over time, ultraviolet (UV) light can damage your skin. In fact, some say that tanned skin, is damaged skin, with sunburn or UV exposure being the main cause of your skin’s ageing.

Freckles, sunspots, fine lines, overly textured skin, thin skin and wrinkles are all signs of sun damaged skin which, depending on genetics, lifestyle and hormones, can appear anywhere between your 20’s and 40’s. Most of us living in the Sunshine State know all too well how harsh the sun can be, but there are treatments that will help reduce the appearance on premature wrinkling, blotchy skin and broken capillaries.

What cosmetic treatments are available for sun damaged skin?

The good news is that there are a range of skin treatments and cosmeceuticals available that can help reduce the appearance of sun damaged skin.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) also called photo rejuvenation is proven to treat sunspots and textured skin. Using broad spectrum light treatment, IPL heats and destroys superficial brown spots and freckles. It typically takes between four to six treatments for the spots to disappear. IPL is beneficial for a range of skin conditions such as facial veins and redness and has the added benefit of increasing collagen production to aid wound healing.

Another treatment that can be used in combination with IPL or on its own, is Microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical peel that exfoliates your skin, removing the top dermal layer, reducing skin discolouration and sunspots. This aesthetic treatment also encourages the body to produce new, vibrant skin that will make you feel smooth to touch and appear healthier.

Are there any skin care products that can help?

Although it is hard to avoid the sun in our tropical climate, preventing sun damage will of course help your skin maintain a healthy, vibrant appearance. Using a sunscreen that offers long lasting protection from UVA and UVB rays, such as Medik8’s Physical Sunscreen will provide powerful protection against free radical damage caused by UV exposure. What’s more, this sunscreen has been formulated so that it can be used after chemical peels, when the delicate skin is highly sensitive to UV rays.

Hydrating your skin each morning with a Vitamin C moisturiser such as Daily Radiance Vitamin C will delivery powerful antioxidant protection alongside sun protection, whilst smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, leaving your skin feeling brighter and smoother for a more youthful-looking appearance.

Ensure when you are out in the sun that you wear a hat and sunglasses as well as sunscreen. Not only will you be more comfortable, you’re also investing in the long term health of your skin.
